PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

These past few weeks have really provided a sense of optimism and positivity. We have seen our teachers and young people involved in a myriad of different activities in and out of classrooms. This increase in activity has had the effect of really lifting everyone’s spirits and creating a fantastic feel around the school.

This being said, young people and phone use has become a bit of a hot topic again. We have been speaking at assembly about two key aspects to do with phone use. The first being that you should only post a comment you would say to someone in person and secondly know that once something is posted online, it is there forever.

I would encourage you to have a conversation with your young people about their phone use and at the risk of telling you what to do in your own homes, consider removing their devices from bedrooms in the evenings, especially overnight, as this is a time when the vast majority of the inappropriate behaviors are happening.

Kind regards

Kyle Brewerton

HOCKEY - CENRAL ZONES

Girls
The hockey girls represented RI with pride and their teamwork was outstanding throughout the day at the central zone competition. After winning all of their pool games they ended up in a semi final with St Cuths. Unfortunately they were beaten in this game but won third place in their final game!
An amazing day on the turf, the girls were very proud of themselves.

Boys
Our boys team also represented RI at the central zone competition with pride and came first! They all played incredibly well and worked together as a team. Their sportsmanship was something to be proud of too. A big thanks goes to their coach, Mike Wright.

HOCKEY - INTER ZONES

Boys
On Wednesday 3 August, the boys played 5 other teams at the Interzone competition (Murrays Bay, Bucklands Beach, Kings, East Counties and Glen Eden). After a stunner of a day both weather and play wise, our RI team finished in 4th place. Amazing! There were many incredible skills showcased by all of the boys throughout the day.

NETBALL - CENTRAL ZONES

Boys
On the 2nd of August, 21 boys travelled to Windmill netball courts to compete in the Central Zone Competition. The sun was shining and the boys were excited to get the competition started. Our experienced Year 8's had a tough pool and faced players they had remembered from the previous year. In their first game, they suffered a loss but they continued to hold their head high and fight for a finals position, unfortunately their draw with Pasadena Intermediate meant they missed out and finished fourth overall.

Our Year 7 team had a strong determined attitude that continued throughout the day. They won all their pool games (some convincingly) and their semi-final round against Waikowhai. Heading into the finals against Ponsonby Intermediate the pressure was on, and the boys stayed strong and took out the win for the day. All boys played outstandingly and it is such a pleasure to see the enjoyment all the boys have in the sport of netball. The Year 7 team will head to Interzones on the 30th of August.

CROSS COUNTRY

On Wednesday 10 August we ran our school Cross Country. The first 8 runners across the finish line in each year group and gender (ie. 32 students) will form the Remuera Intermediate School Cross Country Team at Central Zones on 31 August. Those finishing 9th and 10th will be the reserves.

ART WEEK 2022

Once again during Art Week all the students (and teachers) were busy creating art to exhibit at the art evening. Each student had a piece of art on show as well as some of the Specialist art work. The standard was very high again and our judges - the four head students, Indi Peterson, Tevita Maliepo, Mia Charles and Angus Dickinson, Mr Rassmusen and Mrs Sturgiss spent all afternoon with a lot of discussion about who would be awarded the red rosettes. The two blue rosettes had already been placed by the teachers for effort, attitude and outcome. The RI parent group sponsored the evening by presenting the red rosette winners with a $20 voucher. The event was extremely well attended. It was great to be able to, once again, host a community event.

TRASH TO FASHION

This year we were wowed by 33 wonderful garments at our annual Trash to Fashion extravaganza. The DJ club played their original music throughout the evening. The night runs alongside the Art Week exhibition, so it is a really lovely way to celebrate the arts at RI. Teacher Taylor Adair did a wonderful job of MC for the evening which was judged by another teacher, Sarah Choat and past parent at the school, Joanne Chaplow as well as Sarah Stead who helped out with the prejudging. They spent several hours interviewing the contestants before the event and made their choice after seeing them again on stage. It was an extremely difficult choice, but below are the category winners who won a $100 voucher each sponsored by our RI parent group.

CYCLING NEWS

North Island Schools Road Cycling Championships
Ten RI riders attended this major event in Karapiro/Cambridge during the first weekend of the school holidays. The event had three races over two days:
9 km Team Time Trial
27 km Road Race
4.8 - 8 km Criterium Race

Results with Medals:
Cole Feringa - 3rd in Criterium
RI Boys Team - 2nd in TTT (Cole Feringa, Max Allan, Angus Dickinson, Kairan Strydom). First ever RI medal in the TTT.

Overall School Results
Any rider/team finishing in the top 10 earns points for their school. This year, RI riders excelled and doubled their previous best. The result placed RI 6th in the North Island, only to be beaten by larger Auckland secondary school teams like Auckland Grammar, Westlake Boys, St Kents, EGGS and Baradene. Every RI rider earned points for their school (i.e. top 10 finish). This amazing team consisted of Nova Taylor, Olivia Evans, Ava Donnelly, Cole Feringa, Max Allan, Angus Dickinson, Kairan Strydom, James Turnbull, Caleb Swan and Thomas Still.

North Island Schools Track Cycling Championships
This is the third time RI has been represented at this competition. The riders fought hard against top competition from around the North Island, in particular Cambridge. Each rider had 8 races over 1.5 days.

Results with Medals:
2000 m Team Pursuit - 2nd (team of 3 or 4). First ever RI medal in this event. Cole Feringa, Kairan Strydom and James Turnbull
500 m Team Sprint - 3rd (team of 2) 0.8secs from second. Cole Feringa and Kairan Strydom

All RI riders were exemplary in their behaviour and effort. Congratulations!

Mountain Bike Camp
During the middle weekend of the holidays, the RI mountain biking team went to Rotorua to hone our skills. We learnt pumping, cornering and things that you can't learn in a textbook, only by practising. On the first day we were coached by former #1 NZ downhill rider Louis Hamilton on pumping and cornering. With these skills we can ride twice as fast down the trails which was welcomed heartily by those who like speed. The next day we put our skills to the test, going right to the top of the mountain and coming all the way back down on nice flowy trails. The skills we learnt and mastered will be put to full use in our upcoming MTB races. By the end of the weekend, we had learnt a lot, bonded as a team and slept extremely well when we got home.

MULTI MATERIALS

Year 8 students have completed their novelty dice and laser cut storage box project. Each student made a unique and eye catching item. Some were lined with felt and others contained LED lights.

Year 7 students recently made unique plywood device holders and jewellery trees as part of their specialist subject class. A high level of creativity was on display.
