ATHLETICS DAYS 2022

On the 1st of November, RI had its annual athletics event. Half the school went to Lloyd Elsmore to compete for a position in our Central Zones Athletics Squad while the rest stayed at school and took part in a series of sports events to gain bragging rights for their class.

The weather was magnificent and the day followed suit. All the activities at both events ran smoothly and the students gave it their all. In the end there were some outstanding results.

Competitive Results

Non competitive

Winning classrooms for the non-competitive event were Year 7 – Room 18 and Year 8 – Room 4

AUCKLAND WRITERS FESTIVAL

After counting down the days, Remuera Intermediate’s passionate writers set off to the Auckland Writers Festival, at the end of Term 3. The annual event is a chance for writers across schools to meet inspiring authors. This year we had the great honor of meeting four new authors, across a wide range of genres.

Kwame Alexander- Award Winner of the NY Times best-selling author of 35 books including Newbery Medal Winner the Crossover and Caldecott Medal Winner the Undefeated.

Our first presentation was the charismatic author and poet Kwame Alexander – who joined us via Zoom. Kwame Alexander is an author who has seen much disappointment in his life as he was turned down many times for his book idea. Nonetheless, he taught us all, with his personal experience, that no matter what other people may do, you should never give up. His book: The Crossover, is written in a modern form of poetry, which was new and interesting for all. It was a great privilege to meet Kwame Alexander, and learn from his experiences that have got him to where he is today; with successful achievements in novel writing and poetry.

Sonya Wilson- NZ Current Affairs Broadcaster and Author

The next author that we got to meet was Sonya Wilson, a broadcaster and writer from right here in New Zealand. Sonya Wilson’s novel: The Spark Hunter, is inspired by our homeland of Aotearoa, and the magical nature it holds.  She taught us that inspiration can be found right where you are, and the simplest things can form great ideas. We had the chance to learn more about our own country with a preview of Sonya’s book, alongside having the opportunity to get her book signed and speak to her. It was a privilege to meet Sonya Wilson; and to be transported to magical forests in Aotearoa New Zealand, with her stories.

Graci Kim- Author, and Part of the Rick Riordan Presents Disney Imprint. Bestseller optioned for TV, the Amazon Best Book and Goodreads Choice Award Nominee is now followed by The Last Fallen Moon.

Our third session was with Graci Kim. Graci Kim has had many challenges and obstacles along the way in her life. She explained that it was through these challenges that she got her ideas. Graci taught us that you need to try things and to follow your dreams, in order to find the true passion, you want to have for pursuing life. Her book: The Last Fallen Star, is inspired by her Korean culture and heritage, with legends of Korea told years back by her Grandmother.  It was a great honor to meet Graci Kim and be influenced by her personal experiences.

Gareth Ward- Author and Magician, Winner of the 2016 Storylines Tessa Duder Award and the 2018 Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Youth Novel

Author and sometime magician: Gareth Ward, was the final speaker of the day. With visual effects and incredible animation, Gareth Ward gave us the true feeling of living in the Steampunk world during the Victorian era. His book: The Thaumagicians Revenge, is stimulated from Steampunk fantasy and fiction - alongside the extraordinary world of magic. Gareth’s novels are most inspired by his own personal perspectives and experiences; from travelling to different parts of Britain and the world, to his own career of being a magician.

Each and every student from Remuera Intermediate came back so inspired. It was a great experience to be influenced by these wonderful speakers and their achievements. Special appreciation and thanks towards the teachers and staff that could make this all possible for us students and young writers. Can’t wait for it next year!

"WHY DOES MONEY MATTER?"

Competition Win Brings Books to RI.

RI would like to say a big thank you to Antun Banicevich from Room 30.

Last year Antun entered a competition run by the Financial Service Council (NZ) offering students the opportunity to create a video explaining “Why does money matters”. Antun cleverly used a gaming context to explain to fellow students what they need money for.

Antun took out the Intermediate School’s category and the prize money was used to purchase a great range of books for our library.  Thank you Antun on behalf of all the current and future students at our school.

If you want to check out Antun's video you can see it here.

ART NEWS

Auckland Middle Schools Exhibition

In week 3, 19 Auckland Middle Schools exhibited their artwork down at Silo 6 in Wynyard Quarter. There were 30 RI students participated, including our Trash to Fashion garments. Pictured are some of the students who came to the opening.

Milly McNaughton, Sophie Thorman, Eloise Pinker, Fiona Mombay, Sierra Sharma and Edeline Rahandijo spent the week prior creating a huge mural to sit on the walkway outside the venue so people were aware there was an art exhibition happening inside the Silos.

YEAR 8 SCHOOL SOCIAL NIGHT

Having missed out on so many experiences over the last few years we thought it was important to give Year 8 students an event to remember their time at Remuera Intermediate with. So, on Thursday 3rd November, the Year 8 Social was held in the school hall. The hall was dressed up with balloons, lights and smoke machines and the students were dressed up too as they entered along a red carpet. A great night of dancing and fun was had by all.

GIRLS TOUCH - CENTRAL ZONES

On an overcast Tuesday 8th November the girls touch team traveled to Cox’s Bay Reserve in Westmere for the CZ Touch competition. The tournament consisted of a grueling round robin of 5 games, with only a few minutes in between each game. After winning their first game by default the girls took a while to warm up in the second - going down in a close game to ANI. The team immediately picked themselves up however and went through the rest of the round robin undefeated (against Mount Roskill, Dio and St Cuths), winning their pool in the process.

After a bit of a break for lunch, the girls met Waikowhai in the semi-final. Waikowhai, the eventual winners, played well and a number of decisions went against our team in the game. As a result, they missed out on the final. The last game of the day was a playoff for 3rd and 4th against ANI. Having lost to this team earlier in the day, our team showed their heart and the progress that they had made throughout the day to take out the game 4-3 and finish in a highly creditable 3rd place.

Girls team - Ada Petau, Alex McIntosh, Caylee Linck, Claudia Farr, Eden Clyma, Indi Peterson, Lucy Gargiulo, Mia Charles, Petra Craddock, Taylor Young, Zoe Kalauta, Milan Ekuasi (missed the tournament due to illness)

HOMESTAY FAMILIES WANTED

We have several International Students who are due to study at our school in 2023.

They will arrive in early January to attend English classes at an academy and then will study at RI for an additional four weeks. They are each willing to pay around $300 per week. If you have space for two children, they would be very happy to share a room. It would be great if they were reasonably handy to the school. The agent who cares for them is also looking for longer-term homestay positions for university students.

If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Robert Rasmussen (Director of International Students),  robertr@remint.school.nz or 09 522 9890 extension 819.
