PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Rest, Recharge and Reboot
What an incredible Term we have had. It really has been fantastic to see our students thriving in all areas of school life, from the classroom to the sports field, from the stage to the world. Term 4 promises to be equally challenging and exciting. Today at our termly awards assemblies we will be acknowledging yet another group of young people who have excelled in all these areas of school life. In particular, we will be recognising those students who have not only managed to remain focused on their studies but who have involved themselves in the wealth of opportunities on offer.
It is these additional opportunities that help our young people build a greater sense of who they are and what drives them. This is an opportune age to try new things, to challenge ourselves and to take risks. We encourage our young ones to take some time out over these next couple of weeks to rest, recharge and reboot ready for the final term of 2023. For our year 8’s this can be an especially exciting and nervous time as they look to the year ahead and High School. We hope you all have an enjoyable break and if you are fortunate enough to be able to take some time out as a family, be safe and take care.

SMARTPHONES AT SCHOOL: RESEARCH STUDY INVITATION
Our school is participating in a research study on student mobile phone use at school that is being run by the Child Well-being Research Institute at the University of Canterbury. The researchers want to find out how many students use mobile phones at school, what rules schools have in place, and how phone use at school impacts student outcomes.
Part of the study is an online survey for students. This is optional (your choice). If you would like for your child to take part, the link to the online student survey is below. More information about the research project is given at the link.

DANCE NEWS
This month we took 16 of our RI dancers out to Hawkins Theatre to compete in the Evolution Dance Competition. This is a massive Australian dance competition and our dancers did an amazing job.
All three of our dance troupes, our Lyrical Troupe, our Contemporary Troupe and our Jazz Troupe placed 1st in their sections. We are so proud of our dancers!
AIMS GAMES 2023
In September, after several months of training, teams and individuals headed to Tauranga to take part in Aims games. The teams faced fierce competition from all over North Island. All teams made a great start to the competition coming top of their pool. The teams were great representatives of R.I. displaying teamwork and great sportsmanship.
Scarlett, Hailey, Junu, Calvin, Eric and Timothy represented our school in swimming. Congratulations to Timothy and Hailey for their outstanding results.
Our Futsal boys have also finished their competition. They came top of their pool and were ranked one of the highest due to their goal differences. Entering in the next phase of the competition the boys continued to play well but faced more difficult competition. They lost one match due to penalties after extra time. The boys should be proud of their achievements finishing in the top 8 of the competition.
Basketball had a great start to their competition. They came top of their pool with a goal difference of 146.
Netball played some great games and displayed a great fighting spirit. Even though they didn't quite win some of the latest rounds, the results didn't show the determination and drive on the court to win with most games only coming to a 1 or 2 point difference.
It was great to see the teams were able to watch each other events too.
Tristan had a great time at the AIMS games competing in rock climbing. The competition started off with 40 Year 8 boys and he was one of 5 boys who made it to the finals yesterday after the qualifiers, quarter-finals, and semi-finals. He finished the competition in 3rd place winning the bronze medal. He was 1st place in top rope, 4th in bouldering, and 4th in speed, hence an overall placing of 3rd.
Overall Results:
Futsal: 7th place out of 38 teams
Netball: A grade Division 3 (teams 33-48) 10th in draw. 42/144 in overall competition. Player of the day: Gloriyah and Eden
Basketball: 8th out of 88 teams. Player of the day: Timothy
Swimming: Timothy collected four medals- Gold in 100m and 200m backstroke, Silver in 50m backstroke and Bronze in 200m Individual Medley. Hailey has 3 ribbons for being top 10. The relay team were 7th in Mixed 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay and 8th in Mixed 4 x 50m Medley Relay
TALENT QUEST 2023
In this year's unforgettable talent quest, we witnessed an array of astonishing performances that left us spellbound. Our esteemed guest judges, the renowned Lisa Chappell and Edward Laurenson, along with our very own Miss Faulknor, had the challenging task of selecting the brightest stars from a constellation of talents.
From jaw-dropping Rubik's Cube mastery and mind-bending magic tricks, to breathtaking dance routines, from soul-stirring songs to virtuoso piano performances, and even the enchanting sounds of handmade instruments – our talented contestants truly left us awestruck.

The judges' choices were equally impressive, highlighting the exceptional talents of The Kpop Boys, India, Amelie & Friends, and the dynamic duo of William & Steven. This incredible evening would not have been possible without our charming and witty hosts – Arvin, Tali, Alexei and Lennox, who kept us entertained throughout the night.
RI's Got Talent 2023 will forever be etched in our hearts as a night of pure magic and exceptional talent. Congratulations to all our contestants, and a huge thank you to everyone who made this event an astounding success!
INTERNATIONAL DAY 2023
International Day was a great success! While the weather for the school-wide shared lunch was not on our side, all the students celebrated the day by sharing their cultural dishes with their friends and the other classes in their team. It was also great to see so many of our parent community joining in the celebration.
The Year 7 and Year 8 Assembly showcased a variety of cultural items performed by our talented students.
All of the students involved spent a lot of time practising their items for the Assembly and it was amazing to see such a large number participating in the event. We would like to acknowledge all the teachers and our parents who helped to make the day a great success. Thank you for your support, kindness and dedication to celebrating our International Day.
MARITIME MUSEUM TRIP
This term rooms 10 and 27 took part in a trial visit to the Maritime Museum to see if the experience could enhance our term 3 unit of study “Movement and Migration”.
We could not have asked for a better day weather-wise, as our journey included walking to the Greenlane Train Station, travelling into Britomart on the train and then walking downtown to the viaduct.
On arrival at the Museum, we were split into two groups; one heading to the Education Centre and the other group set sail on the stunning Waitemata Harbour on the Ted Ashby. We travelled back in time and learnt how people came to NZ, starting with Kupe’s journey and how currents, stars, clouds, birds and whales guided these brave explorers to Aotearoa’s shores. Our tour took us through the centuries and learning about Able Tasman, Captain Cook, and the arrival of European settlers. Our students were able to experience a rolling cabin on a migrant sailing ship and to appreciate the cramped conditions that were experienced for several months of travel.
It was a very interesting day as we saw and heard stories of travels and tribulations of the people who made their way to New Zealand and gained an appreciation of the challenges that were overcome to find and settle in a new land. Then, after getting into our life jackets, we sailed out of the viaduct and up to the Harbour Bridge, a first for many of our students. We were even fortunate enough to see a few bungee jumpers!
Safety of course was a priority and it was with the help of our many parent volunteers that enabled the trip to go ahead. Thank you to all of our families who joined us on this outing. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.

Your children’s safety is of paramount importance to us. In order to ensure the safety of all our students, at 9:30 am if your child has not been marked as Present we will send out a text notification to alert you of his/her absence.
We are aware many parents are simply very busy people and forget to notify the school so please respond with a Y and a reason for the absence/lateness.
Respond with an N if you have dropped your child at school or know that he/she was coming to school and we can investigate this promptly.
Should your mobile number change, please notify the school immediately so that we can update our records accordingly.
