Where have all the teachers gone?

Over recent months you may have heard various reports about the shortage of teachers, particularly in Auckland. In an effort to fill vacancies, many casual relief teachers have been employed to teach full-time. Unfortunately, this has now created an additional problem and that is a lack of day to day relievers. The combination of these issues along with the usual Term 3 increase in staff illness has meant there have been a number of occasions recently when we have been unable to find cover for your child's class.

On these occasions, we have been left with no choice but to make the unfortunate decision to split classes. This means that when a teacher is not available to cover a class we distribute the students amongst other classes, typically 2 or 3 students from each room go to another room for the day.

We appreciate that this is not ideal however I can assure you that we make every effort to avoid this situation. Going forward we are hopeful that as the weather improves the situation will improve. It is however likely we will need to continue to split classes on occasion while the teacher supply issue is being resolved across Auckland.

We thank you for your understanding and patience during these challenging times.

Thank you for your contributions

Recently we sent a message seeking payment from those who have not yet paid the school fees and/or donations. I would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to the vast majority of you who have paid all fees and donations in full. It is your support that has enabled us to continue to grow and develop the vast array of opportunities and experiences for your young people.

EPRO INTERSCHOOLS

Last week, we had the pleasure of successfully hosting an EPro8 Interschool event in our school hall, where multiple schools, teachers, and enthusiastic students came to Remuera Intermediate to compete. It was an exciting occasion where everyone worked together, combining what they knew, building on their teamwork skills, and their creativity to solve tricky problems presented to them.

Our four teams performed exceptionally well, with Brainy Buddies and RI Digits securing victories, and MnMs coming in third. They have all made it to the semifinals to be held in a couple of weeks. The fourth team narrowly missed the top three but finishing fourth out of 12 teams is commendable.

INTERZONE BOYS HOCKEY

On a wild weather Wednesday in Term 3, Week 3, the team fought for their position through all the rain, hail and shine. After winning Central Zone playing 11-a-side, the boys had to adapt to playing 7-a-side on half a field against the other winning zone teams. They adapted extremely well and it all paid off! After winning all games in the round-robin, RI played against St Kents in the final. It was a draw at the final whistle, which meant it came down to penalty shootouts. We were the first to get 3 goals which made us the top Intermediate school Auckland team!

Another fantastic hockey competition day for the boys!

YEAR 8 SPEECH COMPETITION

The year 8 speech competition was held on Thursday 17th August. 10 amazing students showcased their skills in public speaking and spoke on the timely theme of- Kaitiakitanga / Guardianship. Several students presented a traditional speech while other students stepped out of their comfort zone and presented a slam poem or rap.

All students who competed in the competition are to be congratulated for the outstanding effort they put into creating their presentations, and the high standard of delivery on the day. The following students took out the top spots, 1st place winners are through to the CZ Ruhi Tai competition:

Alexei Clark Room 5, 1st Speech
Amelie Surgenor Room 7, 2nd Speech
Arvin Rafiee Rm 25, 1st Spoken Word

GIRLS SOCCER

The girl’s soccer team played Northcross Intermediate during Friday lunchtime. They worked well as a team and represented our school well. They had a successful game winning 5-1! They should be very proud of their efforts!

PERFORMANCE MEDIA NEWS

These photos show several Year 7 Performance classes sharing their performance of a Māori story. Their task has been to transform a play based on a Māori legend into a musical. Their results were very creative and entertaining.

CZ CROSS COUNTRY

On the 24th of August, 32 runners headed over to a very muddy Waiatarua Reserve to compete in the CZ Cross-Country Championships. We were really lucky with the weather and all our runners did an amazing job navigating the swampy conditions.

Well done to both our Year 7 girls and Year 7 boys teams who both placed 1st in their competitions. Both Charlie (Room 1) and Emilia (Room 28) came first in their categories. Fantastic results!

SOCIAL CHANGENCY

A number of Year 7 and Year 8 students took part in the recent Race Unity Poster Competition. They were asked to make a poster with the theme of race unity. The Year 7 top posters were created by Summer, Asmi and Venus (all from Room 8). The Year 8 top posters were created by Lydia (Room 20), Laura (Room 5), Jiu (Room 25) and Tiffany (Room 6). All of the posters are on display in the St. Vincent's foyer.

The Social Changency is really happy that many students got involved and are spreading a positive message about all people uniting together.

CZ BASKETBALL GIRLS

The girls had a great day at CZ yesterday. They played really well. We came 2nd in our pool losing only to Ponsonby. We won the quarters and then faced Ponsonby again in the semis. It was a close match but they stretched a lead away from us. We then had a much easier final game against St. Mary's to gain 3rd place. The girls were a great team and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day.

Tim came with us as coach and ref. He was amazing. He reffed all our games and made fair calls for and against our team (no bias) In between games, he coached the girls and advised them on the strengths and weaknesses of our upcoming opponents. He had one tough game because he reffed by himself and even helped out with semis and finals with teams that were short on refs. We could not have managed without him.
