PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
What is Bullying?
On Thursday we participated in Pink Shirt Day. A day started by a group of students in Canada in support of a friend. Having been teased for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school, a couple of classmates rallied together and wore pink shirts in a show of support for him. This went on to represent a bigger idea of calling out and stopping bullying and this then made its way to New Zealand. The original incident was picked up by the media at the time.
Here is a link to the original story.
Bullying is a challenging issue for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that young people are very reluctant to speak up. The trouble with prolonged and targeted bullying is that the victim feels powerless and is often fearful of further or worsening repercussions.
Yesterday I took some time to speak with the students about bullying. The hope was to help them understand the difference between bullying and other mean or aggressive behaviour. We talked about how they are willing to tell an adult at school if a one-off issue happens at lunchtime like being sworn at or being on the receiving end of some racist comments etc. However, when it came to bullying they were reluctant to come forward. I explained why they might be feeling the way they do and more importantly how they can stand up for themselves or their peers to call out bullying.
By understanding the difference between bullying and other antisocial behaviour they are better able to respond appropriately and get proper support.I showed them a video about the power dynamics of bullying in which the presenter does a great job of explaining the underlying psychology of bullying and how to remain empowered in these situations. Of course, this doesn't work for all situations, particularly if there is physical bullying involved. In these situations, we have stressed the need to seek help.
To help our young people call out any bullying that they may have experienced or witnessed, we have created an email that students can contact if they have seen or experienced bullying and find it too hard to speak directly with someone.
This email is callitout@remint.school.nz

LITERATURE QUIZ
Great day had by all at the Literature Quiz held at St Cuthberts School Hall with 2 teams of 4 competing out of 87 teams in total.
The girls were put through their paces with 100 questions. Some tricky questions but our RI girls made us proud - Mrs. Tetley
Students who competed were:
Emily Xie - Room 4, Emma Dench - Room 9, Jhanyaasri Bandaru - Room 10, Inayah Fayyaz - Room 17, Aliana Toy-Cronin - Room 17,
Rebecca Zhou- Room 19, Minudi Mudiyanselage Wanninayaka - Room 20, Wasia Umaimah - Room 27
CZ FUTSAL GIRLS
On Friday the 10th of May, our Year 7 and Year 8 Girls' futsal teams travelled to the Auckland Netball Centre to compete in the Central Zone tournament.
The Year 8 Girls were a dominant force, with a lot of skill and experience in the team. They showed great sportspersonship and humility and represented RI with great integrity. They took out first place with no goals conceded against them and after a very convincing 5-0 win in their final. Congratulations to top goal-scorer Lara with an impressive 9 goals across the day, followed closely by Sienna on 7 and Leura on 6.
The Year 7 Girls were more nervous, after losing many games in training to the Year 8s, and many being new to futsal. However, two impressive wins in their pool match saw them draw confidence. After a nail-biting penalty shoot-out in their semi-final, they advanced to the final thanks to Emily’s heroic goalkeeping and some calm shooting under pressure. Unfortunately, ANI was too strong in the final, but they were very pleased to take out 2nd place.
A special thank you to Lucy Walker, who coached the Year 7 team on the day, and made all of their tactical and substitute decisions. Thanks as well to Amelia Clayton, our photographer, to the parents and brothers who came to support us, and to Craig from Auckland Futsal for his excellent tournament.
Bring on Interzones and AIMS!
Year 7 Girls team: Rio Henderson, Sibley Schaumkell, Charlotte Arthurs, Emily Tait, Charlotte Keogh, Jay Jung, Sam Snashall, Chloe Pusinelli
Year 8 Girls team: Chloe Dale, Lara Lambert, Leura Harris, Sienna Groves, Laura Allan, Emilia Hoeglinger, Imogen Pitchers, Amelia Burr
YEAR 7 LIT WEEK QUIZ
This term, we celebrated Literary Week with a variety of activities happening across the school. The Year 7’s joined a year level Blooket game where each team of 7 needed to log into a chrome book to take part in an interactive quiz.
The hall was buzzing with excitement as teams raced to answer literacy questions to see who could earn the most points.
Congratulations to our winners – Room 14 closely followed by Room 9 and Room 26.
A great way to celebrate all things wonderful to do with books!
ORIENTEERING NEWS
On Thursday 16th May, 24 students attended the Inter-zone Orienteering at Kuegler Farm in Bombay. The muddy, wet conditions made for difficult running, but all competitors put in their best effort. While our teams didn’t place, we still had some positive results.
In particular, Will Ranger (Room 24) finished first on his course for Year 8 Boys. Overall, the event was a testament to our students' determination and skills.
Our Year 7 competitors in particular will have gained from the experience and will have a chance to do even better in 2025.
NEWS FROM THE LOWER HUB - ROOMS 23 - 25
This term, the Year 8 students are focusing on Chemistry for our topic—delving into the properties of solids, liquids and gasses, physical vs. chemical change, atomic structure, acids and bases and more!
Over the past 3 weeks, the HUB (rooms 23, 24 and 25) has enjoyed a number of both theoretical and practical sessions.
As shown in the photos below, we explored the chemical structure of monomers and polymers and then applied this learning; to making slime. The students worked to explain how monomers are linked together to form polymers, which exhibit properties that are different to the chemicals they started with. This is evidence of a chemical change having occurred.
Want to make slime at home?
The best glue is Elmer's glue (available from spotlight) and you need to mix this with a borax solution (borax powder is available from Bunnings).
Add shaving foam for a smoother texture. Enjoy - from Mr Nicholls and the HUB team.
CZ RUGBY GIRLS
On Thursday 16th May, 15 young wahine travelled to Avondale Racecourse to participate in the CZ Rugby tournament.
We had a tough start, but our girls picked themselves up from an intimidating first game against Royal Oak. All players had high spirits all day, uplifted one another and were polite and respectful to their opponents.
We were very pleased with our fourth place ranking at the end of the day. We are now looking forward to the CZ Rugby League competition in Term 3, we would love to have a boys team join us for the day so... lads keep an eye out on the school notices for the sign-up form!
RIPPA TAG FINALS
The finals of the inter-class Rippa Tag competition wrapped up last week.
The Year 7 final was a Syndicate battle between Room 11 and Room 12. In a tense game where it came down to some individual brilliance Room 11 was crowned our Year 7 Champions for 2024.
In the Year 8 final, we had Room 4 vs Room 22. In another close game Room 4 was leading with 10 seconds on the clock only to concede and try in the final moments. With extra time, Room 4 was able to dive over the try line to claim the championship for 2024.
A special thank you to our student referees and Mr Whitehouse for his organisation of this term-long event.
