Celebrating Success: Remarkable Achievements in Our Educational Journey
As we look back on the progress made over the past year, we are thrilled to celebrate a series of significant achievements that reflect the hard work of our students and the dedication of our teachers. Our biannual assessments have provided valuable insights into our academic programs, and this report highlights the outstanding successes we have seen across various disciplines.
One of the most impressive achievements is the increase in high-performing students. Approximately 25% of students are now achieving at a Year 10 level, and 89% are performing at or above expectation. This is complemented by a significant reduction in students achieving below expectations, with 70 fewer students falling into this category compared to previous years.
In Year 7 Mathematics, students have made remarkable progress, with their growth nearly doubling the expected rate. By the middle of Year 7, most students are already performing at or above Year 8 levels, reflecting the accelerated growth across all student groups.
The reading comprehension results also stand out, with a notable improvement in Year 7. Male students, in particular, showed 30% greater progress than their female counterparts, though both genders performed above Year 8 expectations by mid-year.
Year 8 has seen similar success in their Reading progress. The mean score for students by the middle of the year surpasses Year 9 expectations, with accelerated growth noted across almost all groups. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations has risen from 45% to an impressive 73%.
Additionally, in Maths, 91% of Year 8 students are now at or above expectations, and 40% are performing at a Year 10 level or higher.
While we celebrate these milestones, there is still work to be done. Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that we will keep striving to support all students, including those who may still need additional help. Nevertheless, the results we have achieved this year reflect the effectiveness of our rigorous and engaging curriculum, along with the incredible efforts of our teaching staff and students.
Together, we are shaping a bright future for our learners, and we look forward to continuing this journey of success.

SUMMER UNIFORM AND HATS
As we move back into the summer months in Term 4, students are required to wear a hat when outside.
Please ensure hats are clearly named. Any hats found to have graffiti will be removed and students will be required to purchase a new one. If you need a new hat, these can be purchased from the uniform shop or the school office. Students may also choose to wear sandals however, on the days they have specialist subjects, they must wear leather lace-up shoes for safety reasons.
INTERNATIONAL DAY
AIMS GAMES 2024
The AIMS Games is an opportunity and a half, full of emotion, opportunities for growth, learning about team spirit and challenging oneself to go outside of your comfort zone. That's exactly how the R.I. teams and individuals felt about the week at the AIMS Games.
We had teams competing in various sports. It wasn't just about playing their sport. The teams were also able to take part in the opening ceremony of a sporting event with more competitors than the Olympic Games, have team building experiences like a team mini golf competition, and cheer on fellow R.I. competitors than in other sports.
The AIMS Games has created memories for life both during games and outside of them.
AIMS FOOTBALL
The boys football team started their tournament with fierce determination and grit beating last year's winners, Hutt International Boys' School, 4-0. They went on to win all round-robin games and were placed first in their pool. In the next round robin, they won all three games and then progressed through to the quarter-finals playing Glen Eden Intermediate.
The score was locked at 2-2 at full-time, forcing them into a cruel penalty shootout which they lost. The boys were gutted but picked themselves up to go on and win their next game. Their last game was the 5th/6th playoff against Hutt International Boys' School which they lost in a penalty shootout. So heartbreaking to lose their only two games to penalty shootouts.
The boys were a very special group of passionate players who love the game of football. They gave their heart and soul and left everything on the field. One parent commented that there were no selfish players in the team. They played as a formidable team with amazing passing and communication.
It was beautiful to watch.

AIMS MOUNTAIN BIKING & BMX
Fletcher Syme had a great race against some tough competitors and came 6th overall. It was a beautiful day. He and Callum Lyman caught up after the race.
Fletcher got to start in the front row as he had a good seeding time trail.
Callum Lyman placed 9th overall in the Year 8 Boys BMX and 26th overall in the Enduro mountain biking.
AIMS CROSS COUNTRY
We had four Year 8 students compete in the Cross Country race on Sunday. It’s the biggest Cross Country race in NZ for this age group. A whopping 129 Year 8 boys and 133 Year 8 girls were competing! The conditions were dry and sunny, but there was a bit of wind on some stretches of the track.
Charlie Grant had an impressive run and finished 5th, Lucas Kennedy finished 110th.
For the girls, Emilia Hoglinger placed 16th and Sienna Groves was 33rd across the finish line! An impressive result all round.
AIMS SWIMMING
It was always a highly competitive event at AIMS – our RI swimmers made us proud!

AIMS WATERPOLO
The RI Girls Water Polo team started off well, the team learned to bounce back from early tournament losses, add challenges to themselves during easy wins, and experience playing in an AIMS Games final.
After 9 games in 4 days, and experiencing the highs and lows of tournaments, the team came away proud winners of a hard-fought SILVER medal.

AIMS ROCKCLIMBING
With events over several days TianTian had to qualify for the next round as only some entries went through. TianTian entered into the final round competing courses in Top Rope, Speed and Bouldering. He did really well in each event finishing 2nd overall, achieving Silver.
AIMS GYMNASTICS
Taiyo competed in various events during his competition days. He finished 1st on the floor, 2nd in vault, 3rd in Pommel, 7th on the rings, 6th on the high bar, 5th on the parallel bars and finishing 6th overall.
AIMS GIRLS FUTSAL
Over 5 days of intense futsal competition at Baypark Arena, Tauranga, our RI girls were worthy recipients of AIMS bronze medals!
After advancing through round robin and pool play games undefeated, nerves were high (players and supporters!) going into the semi-final play-offs for the top 4 spots in the competition. A close game against Randwick Park School was reflected in the 1-1 result at full-time, with the team then going down by one goal in a penalty shoot-out, ending a chance for a shot at the top spot.
Full credit to then rally in the 3rd vs 4th play off to beat Sommerville Intermediate convincingly 4-1! Overall, the girls did RI proud with their outstanding effort, performance, and attitude.

AIMS ORIENTEERING
Ren Sugahara, Luc Ranger, Evan Swart, Will Ranger and Finley Connor all ran well and achieved good results. Ren came in 18th. Fantastic results of the event were from Will, who came 4th and Finley finished 3rd.
In the team event, they finished 9th and 15th.
YEAR 7 STUDENTS IN THE FOODS ROOM
Year 7 students are developing fine food preparation and cooking skills. Actively working together in small groups and communicating well, they create delicious food.
With knowledge of nutrients and wise shopping skills they are learning to make healthy food choices. Some recipes introduce them to new ways of bringing more coloured vegetables into their meals.
We hope your child is confidently demonstrating these skills at home!
OUR VEGGIE GARDENS SPRING TO LIFE
Spring has arrived and it’s the perfect time for planting seeds and seedlings and growing our kumara tipu for planting early next term.
Garden to Table students in Cycle 3 have been harvesting winter veg preparing the ground for new planting and sowing seeds and seedlings. Popular vegetables that have been sown are bean; runner and dwarf, peas, potatoes, carrots, cucumber and tomatoes.

IZ FUTSAL
On the 17th of September, we had 4 Futsal teams travel to Auckland Netball Courts in St John’s for the Futsal interzone competition.
The teams were excited for the day ahead especially after not having an interzone last year. All teams played extremely well for the day always supporting each other and remaining positive no matter the score.
Overall our teams did extremely well with both the year 7 & 8 boys teams placing first, the Year 8 girls team also placing first and the Year 7 girls finishing fourth.
The results are as follows:
Year 7 Girls - 2-2 draw against ANI and place 4th overall
Year 8 Girls - 9-1 win over Elim Christian, 3-4 loss to Northcross, 8-2 win over Murray's Bay, 9-1 win over Northcross in the final
Year 7 Boys - ANI 6-2 win, Murray's Bay 6-0 win, Takapuna 5-0 win, Takapuna in the final 5-3 win
Year 8 Boys - Kōwhai 3-1 win, Northcote 4-2 win, St Kent's 8-0 win, Northcross in the final 5-3 win
RI's GOT TALENT
After weeks of practising and auditioning in front of Miss Powell, Mrs Tetley and Mrs McGaw it was time for RI’s Got Talent.
On Thursday, 19 September, seventeen brave acts took the stage, to perform in a jam-packed hall. It was an extremely successful night with a variety of different performers. From juggling to a piano trio the night was full of high-quality entertainment.
All performers need to be commended as it takes something special for a student to want to put themselves out for the community to see.
This night would not have been successful without the impressively brave students sharing their talents, however, we do want to thank all the amazing teachers, the brilliant hosts and the wonderful student helpers who made this night extremely successful.
1st Place went to Zachary Guo - For the Violin playing an outstanding piece called Czardas
2nd place went to Maxwell Andrews - For his powerful theatrical performance of the classic poem Little Red Riding Hood by Road Dahl
3rd place went to Janice Lu - For mesmerising the audience with her performance of Chopin Nocturne Op.9 No.1.
We were also lucky enough to have judges' choice awards to recognise more students. These went to Steven Song for his enthusiastic piano playing, Ashley Ling for her powerful dancing, Vasi Latu’ila for her heart and courage to continue singing through the tears and Jaewon Kim for his outstanding drumming for his band.
RI CHEER - THE GRAND CHAMPIONS
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. Excellence isn’t the result of magic - it takes sweat, determination and hardwork. Even in the face of failure you need the mindset to pick yourself back up and keep going.
This is the perfect description of this year’s Cheer Team - the commitment I have seen from this is amazing! They have been working incredibly hard and last Sunday at our first competition, all their hard work paid off and then some.

HIT ZERO: this means they hit a perfect routine with no mistakes
SCHOLASTIC LEVEL 1/2 CHAMPIONS: 1st place in their division
SCHOLASTIC GRAND CHAMPIONS: Highest overall scoring school team across all Scholastic Divisions including Universities.
This achievement is incredible! They are the first RI Cheer team to be awarded Grand Champions since 2018. It didn’t even enter my mind that we would win this - we were in the middle of taking team photos when I heard the award being announced and told them to stop and run up on stage. When they asked me what it was for, I said “I’ll tell you after you get off stage - just go up and scream loudly” - which they did, although their screams when I explained to them what had happened were so much louder, so much so that the crowd couldn’t hear the MC and he had to stop and wait for them to calm down.
But more important than all their success is the way they carried themselves - I have never had such an easy day at the competition. Their team unity and spirit are phenomenal. They are by far the happiest group of students I’ve had in more years than I can count!! The energy and joy that radiates out of them is infectious. It doesn’t matter how I’m feeling before, spending time surrounded by their enthusiasm rubs off on me and I finish feeling amazing.

Our children’s safety is of paramount importance to us. In order to ensure the safety of all our students, at 9:45 am if your child has not been marked as Present we will send out a text notification to alert you of his/her absence.
We are aware many parents are simply very busy people and forget to notify the school so please respond with a Y and a reason for the absence/lateness.
Respond with an N if you have dropped your child at school or know that he/she was coming to school and we can investigate this promptly.
Should your mobile number change, please notify the school immediately so that we can update our records accordingly.
