William Pike Challenge 2025 - Expressions of Interest
The William Pike Challenge is an outdoor education programme for intermediate school pupils, similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Some of the main values instilled and nurtured in pupils through the WPC are Courage, Teamwork, Resilience, Compassion, Pride and Enthusiasm.
William Pike is a teacher who was caught in a volcanic eruption on Mt Ruapehu in 2007. He suffered many injuries and lost his right leg. William was motivated by his accident and created the programme to provide young New Zealanders with a pathway to new experiences outdoors. Please visit the William Pike website for more info: www.williampike.co.nz
Students have to complete a range of challenges over the year, including:
- 6 outdoor activities, run conjointly between the school and qualified instructors
- 20 hours of learning a new hobby, sport, or skill
- 20 hours of community service
Expressions of interest are now open for the 2025 William Pike Challenge. The programme is only open to students who will be in Year 8 in 2025.
The programme will cost between $900 and $1200, subject to final activity costs for 2025.
In order to apply, interested families should first attend our combined graduation and information evening, with a guest appearance from William Pike himself. This will be held on Tuesday 19 November at 6:15pm in the school hall.
