The NZ Curriculum introduced in 2007 provides the learning framework for all schools, irrespective of type, size or location. It gives each school the scope, flexibility and authority to design and shape its school curriculum so that teaching and learning is meaningful and beneficial to its particular students and community.
In turn, our School curriculum allows teachers the scope to make interpretations in response to the particular needs, interests and talent of individuals and groups in their class.
A copy of our Curriculum Overview is available here. In addition to these units of study, we continue to deliver subject specific curriculum material as necessary.
This framework is supported by the Key Competencies:
Managing self
Thinking
Participating and Contributing
Using language, symbols and texts
Relating to others
When planning programmes our Curriculum Managers ensure that learning relates back to our Vision.

The Students will be involved in this Programme in one of two ways.
Either in a Schoolwide Programme such as Cheerleading, Starburst or Coding Extension or in a Syndicate Based Programme.
Students involved in the Schoolwide Programme will be pre-selected prior to each cycle of 2E’s. These activities are run by a combination of Classroom Teachers and Specialist Teachers. The Syndicate Based Programme is taught by those Classroom Teachers not already involved in Schoolwide Commitments.
In Term 2 and 3, all Students will be involved from 1:40 pm - 2:50 pm every Friday, except during Awards Assemblies and End of Term Assemblies. This means most Programmes will run for a period of 8-9 weeks depending on the Term.
This Programme provides an opportunity for all Students throughout the School to participate in an area of Extension or Enrichment that they may not have experienced before. Our hope is that these experiences may give our young people some insight into where their passions may lie.
RI has a sister-school relationship with Befu Elementary School in Fukuoka in Japan. Each year 30 students are chosen for an exchange to this school.
The objectives for these exchanges are:
To provide an opportunity for our students to develop understanding, knowledge and an appreciation of other cultures.
To provide opportunities for comparing lifestyles.
To foster ongoing friendships.
To develop skills of interdependency and social integration.
This Japan exchange is approximately 10 days long and occurs around early September. Students are accompanied by RI staff.
Every second year, RI hosts a reciprocal visit from students and teachers from Befu Elementary School. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our School to experience some Japanese culture and to share our culture. Befu students are billeted with RI families.
For 2024, Year 7 and Year 8 students interested in visiting Japan are invited to submit an application by Monday 25 March 2024. Please click the following links for more information and online application form:

The William Pike Challenge (WPC) is an outdoor education programme, similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award but aimed at intermediate school students. The WPCwas developed by William Pike, an outdoor enthusiast and teacher who was caught in a volcanic eruption on Mt Ruapehu in 2007, resulting in him losing his right leg. William was motivated by his accident to create the WPC to provide young New Zealanders with a pathway to new outdoor experiences.
The core values instilled and nurtured in students through the WPC are Courage, Teamwork, Resilience, Compassion, Pride and Enthusiasm. These values are important for any person to develop and match closely with our own School values.
Complete six outdoor activities. Activities are held in the local area, organised by the school and run jointly by teachers and outdoor activity provider.
Develop a new sport, skill or hobby. This is chosen and undertaken completely independently by the pupils, monitored by the project leader.
Undertake 20+ hours of community service. This is organised and undertaken completely independently by students with support from the project leader.
Students also meet weekly to check in with the project leader and get information and training on the activities to come.
Late each year, Year 7 students can attend a WPC Launch Evening after which they are invited to apply to complete the WPC during Year 8. Approximately 30 students are able to participate each year.
We currently do not any financial sponsors to help make the WPC programme more financially viable. If you are a business owner and would be interested in financially supporting this programme, please contact the school office.
