PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Who do you want to be when you grow up?

At assembly this week we asked our young people what sort of person they wanted to be in 20 years. Not what they wanted to do but who they wanted to be. This is an important distinction as it is very difficult to know what sort of career we would like at such an early age. The reality is, whatever ideas our young ones have about their future will likely change many times as the years go by.

It is important to start talking about this now as adolescence is a time of great change and self-discovery, as we begin to develop our own identities and figure out who we want to be in the world. It's a time of excitement and possibility, but also of uncertainty and confusion. Choosing who we want to be as teenagers can be a daunting task, but it's also an opportunity to stretch our resilience and create a fulfilling life that aligns with our values and passions.

The positive first step in choosing who we want to be as young people is to explore our interests and passions. This could involve trying out new hobbies and activities, joining clubs or groups that align with our interests, or simply taking the time to reflect on what brings us joy and fulfilment. By exploring our passions, we can begin to develop a sense of purpose and direction that will guide us as we move forward.

It is important to note that these do not necessarily need to be great undertakings. Simply trying something new or making one positive choice is a step forward. Often it is the little things that can make the biggest difference. Choosing to turn up looking our best gives others the impression we value school and are here to work hard, learn and make the most of the opportunities available. Putting our rubbish in the bins ensures we have a school we can all be proud of. Being in class ready to learn on time means we get the most out of the day.

Choosing who we want to be as young people is not a one-time decision. Our interests and passions may change over time, and it's okay to pivot and explore new opportunities as they arise. It's also important to remain flexible and open-minded, willing to learn from our experiences and adjust our plans as needed.

The journey of choosing who we want to be as we grow is an exciting and challenging prospect, but one that can set the foundation for a fulfilling and purposeful life. By exploring our interests and passions, challenging ourselves, making small changes, and remaining open-minded and adaptable, we can create a life that is aligned with our true selves.

TENNIS NEWS

Kicking off the first CZ for the year, a group of talented tennis players headed to the ANC to battle it out against other schools from our area. The serves were precise and groundstrokes were hitting their mark. Their opponents put up a good fight, but the boys were able to stay focused and play their best tennis. By the end of the day, the boys were exhausted but elated, coming in with some incredible results: Year 7 Boys Singles 1st, Year 7 Boys Doubles 1st, Year 8 Singles 2nd & Year 8 Boys Doubles 2nd. It was a truly successful day on the tennis court! Thanks to Miss Mikaela Ruttenberg & Miss Leonie Ropiha for helping with trials.

PTA COMMUNITY PICNIC

The community picnic held last Thursday was a great success. This was one of our best-attended picnics ever and we were so pleased to be able to hold it without restrictions. Well over 1000 people attended and really made the school feel like the Community that it is. It really was a pleasure getting to meet so many of you in a relaxed setting.

A massive thank you to all those who attended and especially the PTA and all their many helpers behind the scenes. Even Auckland’s weather came to the party, making a late run at an attempt of a summer evening.

Overall, the event was a great success and we look forward to organizing more community events in the future. Thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a memorable day.

TABLE TENNIS NEWS

Auckland Table Tennis Demonstration

This year we were all treated to an outstanding display of table tennis skills at our year 7 assembly. Auckland Table Tennis offered to come along and show our year 7’s how much fun the sport could be and to offer our lucky students the chance to take up their offer of free Table Tennis Lessons. We would like to thank Ebi, Josh and Danya for coming along to wow our students and to give our teachers a chance to show off their fantastic skills as well!

Congratulations to our winner Zayne Cabiling from Room 12 who managed to return a New Zealand Olympic Champions serve!! Well done Zayne.
