PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Success
This year we have begun taking a deeper look into what we mean when we think about success. Whilst academic success remains our primary focus, intermediate schooling offers so many more opportunities for our young people to shine.
This past week has once again highlighted the importance of sport with the FIFA world cup drawing huge crowds and promoting a spirit of celebration and positivity. Cinemas were once again full with the release of two wildly different movies each drawing different crowds and in some cases the same.
Our Kapahaka group visited RPS to join in their Matariki celebrations and put on an outstanding performance. As a school, we are hosting a STEM event ‘ePro8’ next week which will bring many of Auckland's greatest young problem solvers together to build and create all sorts of weird and wonderful contraptions.
This breadth of experience and these demonstrations of success are what we pride ourselves on as a school. We encourage you to talk to your young people about these opportunities. If they have not yet put themselves out there and tried something new, take some time to talk with them to help them consider what they might like to try in the coming months.
These two years are a prime opportunity to not only continue to progress our learning but to also explore who we are and what passions may be hiding just beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered.

HOCKEY NEWS
CZ Girls Hockey
In Term 2, the hockey girls represented RI with pride and their teamwork and skills were outstanding throughout the day at the central zone competition. After winning all of their pool games they ended up in a semifinal with Dio. Unfortunately, they were beaten in this game but won third place in their final game and ended up on the podium. An amazing day on the turf and they should be proud of themselves. A big thank you to their coach Andrew Thompson.
CZ Boys Hockey
In Term 3, our boy's team also represented RI at the central zone with pride and they finished the day in first place! They all played incredibly well and worked together as a team. Their sportsmanship was something to be proud of too. Over the course of the day, they scored 34 goals and only ONE goal was scored against them. Thanks to their coaches Ash and Graham. The boys can look forward to another awesome day at the Interzone competition.
Congratulations to the following students who have been selected from 90 triallers to be in the U13 Auckland hockey team. This team will be heading to Fiji towards the end of the year. Over 90 children were trialed, so it’s impressive that these 8 players are on the team.
Team: Henry Martin, Jayden Naran-Patel, Kieran Lash, Pahul Saini, Shyam Dhanji, William Bason, Lizzie Hawksbee, Giuliana Gianesini
MATARIKI CELEBRATIONS
To celebrate Matariki, some members of the Kapa Haka group went on a trip to visit the students at Remuera Primary School. The group performed some of their waiata (songs), showed their poi and taiaha skills and the boys showed off their haka skills.
It was their first performance of the year and they did an amazing job.
In the Year 8 Te Reo Māori classes, the students learned different stories about the Māori New Year.
They made stars to represent Matariki and her children, and inside their stars they wrote a goal/wish/hope for the coming year. They also decorated some kites which are traditionally flown around Matariki time to represent the connections between the Earth and the heavens.
They learned that each star in the Matariki cluster has a meaning and is responsible for a certain aspect of the world.

BOYS CZ NETBALL
On the 25th of July a Year 7 and Year 8 boys team travelled to Windmill netball courts in Epsom. It is great to see boys getting involved in sports that they may not play out of school and it was a pleasure to take the two boys' teams. Both teams did extremely well, the year 7’s grew through each game becoming familiar with the rules and how to move on the court. They had a great attitude throughout the day always remaining positive and finished 3rd overall.
The Year 8’s is a team like no other, the way they move on the court and just play their game is always outstanding to watch. Throughout the day they tried new plays and new strategies which continued to grow them as a team. Overall they finished 1st and will be attending interzones.
