PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Good Luck to Our Japan Exchange Group
Next Monday, 30 students and 5 staff, including myself, will be making our way to Fukuoka in Japan to visit our sister school, Befu Elementary for the first time in five years. It is so exciting to get this programme up and running once more after such a long break. These young people are extremely fortunate to be involved in such an incredible opportunity for so many reasons. In a world with many challenges and in which people are facing real adversity, it is great to be exposing our young people to a broader view of the world in which they live. As per our mission statement, we aim to develop resilient, compassionate and responsible members of a global community. Here are a few ways this trip aims to help these young people achieve this goal.
Discovering New Cultures
Travelling internationally is like opening a door to a whole new world. When you visit a different country, you get to experience cultures that are different from your own. You might see people wearing different clothes, hear them speaking new languages, and taste foods you've never tried before. This exposure helps you appreciate the rich diversity that exists in the world and teaches you that there is no single "right" way to live. By learning about other cultures, you gain a deeper understanding of and respect for people who may be very different from you.
Seeing the World from a New Perspective
One of the most valuable things about travelling is that it helps you see the world from a new perspective. When you step outside of your everyday environment, you start to notice things that you might take for granted at home. You might realise how different life can be in another part of the world, or you might start to think about your own life in new ways. This shift in perspective can make you more open-minded and understanding, helping you see the bigger picture and appreciate the diversity of human experience.
Building Independence and Confidence
Travelling to another country, especially without your family, is a big step that can help you grow in many ways. It pushes you to be more independent, as you might have to navigate new places, communicate with people who speak a different language, or figure out how to get around in a new city. These challenges can be tough, but they also help you build confidence in your own abilities. When you successfully overcome obstacles on your travels, you realise that you can handle whatever comes your way, both at home and abroad.
Making Life-long Memories and Friendships
Travelling isn’t just about the places you see; it’s also about the people you meet and the experiences you share. When you travel, you have the chance to make new friends from different backgrounds and create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s sharing a meal with a local family, exploring a famous landmark, or learning a new skill, these experiences become stories you’ll treasure and share for years to come. The friendships and connections you make while travelling can also broaden your understanding of the world and give you a global network of friends.

In today’s world, being globally minded is more important than ever. By travelling internationally at a young age, you prepare yourself for a future where understanding and connecting with people from all over the world is key. The skills and experiences you gain from travelling such as adaptability, communication, and cultural awareness are incredibly valuable. Whether you’re working on a school project, planning your future career, or just exploring your interests, these experiences will give you an edge and help you succeed in an increasingly connected world.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE ART ROOM
MATHEX 2024
Early in Term 2, it was wonderful to see such a large number of enthusiastic mathematicians trying out to be in the school Mathex teams for 2024.
There were some wonderful results and it was certainly a real challenge getting it down to two Year 7 teams and two Year 8 teams.
On the night of the competition, 22 August, our teams competed fiercely against 120 other teams from around the Auckland region.
They all performed wonderfully with the Year 7 teams finishing 4th equal and 5th equal, and the Year 8 teams both reaching 100 points with the A team finishing 4th.
We are all very proud of their efforts.

IZ BOYS NETBALL
On the 27th of August, the Year 7 boys netball team travelled all the way to Henderson Te Pai netball courts for their Interzone competition. The day started off with plenty of rain, but the boys did not let the weather affect how they played, placing second in their pool games. As the sun came out for the day, the challenging games came with it. Pushing through the sore feet, sore ankles, and heat, the boys overall had a very successful day, finishing 5th.
Interzones boys netball is always a competition that surprises the boys every year; it is very competitive and is met with some extremely skilled teams. It is always a joy to see boys get involved in a sport that is largely considered for just girls and dedicate their time to training and learning a new sport.

CZ RUGBY LEAGUE
On the 22nd of August, 20 RI students travelled to Fowlds Park to compete in the central zone Rugby League tournament. Although we did not place on the day, all students played with grunt and enthusiasm, showing heart all day long!

CZ CROSS COUNTRY
On the 29th August, 32 runners headed over to a very muddy Waiatarua Reserve to compete in the CZ Cross Country Championships. We were really lucky with the weather and all our runners did an amazing job navigating the swampy conditions (no shoes were lost!).
Well done to both our Year 7 girls and Year 7 boys teams, who both placed 3rd in their competitions.
The Year 8 girls’ team placed 2nd and the Year 8 boys’ teams placed 1st and are through to IZ Cross Country on Tuesday, week 7. Fantastic results!

Our children’s safety is of paramount importance to us. In order to ensure the safety of all our students, at 9:45 am if your child has not been marked as Present we will send out a text notification to alert you of his/her absence.
We are aware many parents are simply very busy people and forget to notify the school so please respond with a Y and a reason for the absence/lateness.
Respond with an N if you have dropped your child at school or know that he/she was coming to school and we can investigate this promptly.
Should your mobile number change, please notify the school immediately so that we can update our records accordingly.
